1865-1874
The first KKK was not founded as a hate group. It was originally founded as a social club in Pulaski, TN, by Confederate Civil War veterans protesting the current government. It soon grew to an terrorist organization opposing blacks and anyone who supported them. It was not, at it's beginning, meant as a white supremacist group, it merely opposed blacks because they were a symbol of what the South had lost in the Civil War. But this developed as the group became more focused.
This time period was when the most lynchings happened, and the government had the least opposition to the group.
The costumes of this time were less uniform, and consisted of some form of mask with a robe.
This Klan ended in 1874 because the individual groups became scattered and the government took action against them.
